The 4-story design of the City College Chinatown/North Beach Campus was approved by the City College Board of Trustees unanimously yesterday night. With the already approved 14-story design, the said project, with repeated twists and turns, has successfully moved another significant step forward. Supporters present at the meeting clapped enthusiastically after the vote and expressed hopes that the new campus can start construction soon.

Community members secured another victory in the City College Chinatown Campus project on the evening of 10th when the City College Board voted unanimously to approve the 4-story revised design for Lot 5. The project’s supporters and students, and teachers of City College spoke out at the meeting enthusiastically to urge the Board to vote for the design promptly. Chair of the City College Board Lawrence Wong believed the outcome was the result of the united community and fearlessness against the threat of hegemonic power.

A permanent campus will benefit the many generations to come. It should be supported by all parties. Nevertheless, the project has created controversy.

Friends May Join Lawsuit to Fight for Education Opportunities in Chinatown (Ming Pao)
With regard to the lawsuit filed with the San Francisco Superior Court against City College of San Francisco, which questions the project’s non-compliance with the California’s Environment Quality Act (CEQA), Ling-chi Wang, a member of the Friends of Educational Opportunities in Chinatown (FEOC), said yesterday that this lawsuit may deter the progress of the project, based on what he knows. People are now waiting to see whether the judge will take the complaint. FEOC is considering joining in a countersuit to fight for educational opportunities in Chinatown.
